We’ll strengthen decentralisation- JM

The Flagbearer and Leader of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has restated his commitment to strengthening the country’s decentralisation process.

According to Mr. Mahama, “it is only through decentralisation that we can see true progress in the country”.

Speaking at a meeting with the Civil and Local Government Staff Association, Ghana (CLOSAG) in Accra on Thursday, the former President said it is important to put the destiny of development in the hands of the people, adding “without that we cannot progress as a country”.

Mr. Mahama observed that the progress made in decentralisation has been rolled back in the last three and a half years, following the bastardisation of both the civil and local government service by the government.

He said the government has assisted in the hijacking of the work of the civil and local government service by political assistants, pointing out that as a result of interference by the government, recruitment and promotion is no longer based on merit.

Why should a past president dream of contesting an incumbent? – Akufo-Addo

Why should a past president dream of contesting an incumbent? – Akufo-Addo

President Nana Akufo-Addo has said he still finds it strange that a former president, John Mahama has decided to contest him in the forthcoming elections.

According to President Nana Addo, this is the first time a former president is contesting an incumbent, adding that the NDC’s flagbearer John Mahama has nothing new to offer Ghanaians other than the ‘incompetence and corruption’ Ghanaians witnessed under his tenure.

Speaking in an interview on Wontumi TV, Nana Addo established that Ghanaians will be making a grave mistake if they in the unlikely even vote for the opposition NDC and John Dramani Mahama in the December polls.
“This is the first time in our history that an incumbent president and an immediate past president is contesting for an election. Ghanaians should ask themselves what Mahama used his power for while he was in government. It’s not as though Mahama hasn’t been president before, he has. He did more than four years because he was even a vice president. What did he do? What’s his record that is making him seek a second term?” he queried.

President Akufo-Addo has for that matter appealed to Ghanaians not to make the “biggest mistake” again of entrusting the country’s resources and future into the hands of John Mahama because he believes his performance is the worst in the past 30years.Meanwhile, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is currently in the Ashanti Region as part of the regional working tour he began last week.

Voter’s register: Akufo-Addo embarking on ethnic discrimination – Mahama

Former President John Mahama has accused President Akufo-Addo of using the military to deny non-Akans in certain parts of the country from exercising their right to register and vote in the upcoming elections.

It comes on the back of viral footage where soldiers are seen purportedly asking non-Akans, particularly Voltarians, questions in queues at registration centres at Banda in the Bono region.

In a statement on Facebook, Mr Mahama said the President is deliberately embarking on ethnic discrimination.

“There have been many reports and video evidence, like the one in this post, of the President’s deployment and discriminatory use of soldiers to target our brothers and sisters in the Volta Region and wherever there are settlements of Voltarians and non-Akans.

“Executive power must not be used to foment ethnic discrimination and abuse as is happening under Nana Akufo-Addo. These calculated acts of “dehumanisation, disenfranchising Ghanaians and stripping them of their citizenship” must end. They will surely never happen under a new NDC administration because we will foster a spirit of peace and unity in our nation”.

He said a future NDC government will not discriminate among Ghanaian

This is not the Ghana our forebears toiled for and built! Each and every successive President left a peaceful, stable and united country.

The road President Akufo-Addo is taking our beautiful country through, using the military and party thugs to stop people from exercising their right to register and vote in the upcoming December elections, is dangerous and unacceptable.

There have been many reports and video evidence, like the one in this post, of the President’s deployment and discriminatory use of soldiers to target our brothers and sisters in the Volta Region and wherever there are settlements of Voltarians and non-Akans.

They will surely never happen under a new NDC administration because we will foster a spirit of peace and unity in our nation.

As Commander-in-Chief, I will not use our military in such a partisan manner to terrorise our own people, and in matters that are purely civil and dwell in the very heart of our constitutional democracy.

I WILL WORK CLOSELY TO DEEPEN THE ROLE OF ASSEMBLY MEMBERS IN MY ADMINISTRATION BY JOHN DRAMAMI MAHAMA

The Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has assured assembly members that the next NDC administration will work closely with them to deepen their role in governance.

Mr Mahama says as the first point of contact for the resolution of many issues in electoral areas, assembly members require support from government to enable them effectively to discharge their enormous responsibilities.

Addressing a meeting with the Ghana Association of Assembly Members (GAAM) at his office in Accra, the former president observed that not only do assembly members attend to the day-to-day needs of the people, but they also serve as community development agents.

He has therefore pledged to design training programmes to improve the capacity of assembly members as well as pay them monthly allowances to encourage them to do more for their communities.

The NDC flagbearer also reiterated that he will ensure the completion of all projects that the current government has deliberately abandoned including roads, schools and health facilities so that the people can reap the benefit of those projects.

Touching on COVID-19, Mr Mahama said he called for the involvement of local community leaders such as chiefs, assembly members and opinion leaders in the national response plan to help stop the spread, but that call was ignored.

The result, he observed, was the woeful failure of the distribution of food relief packages and the poor level of awareness of COVID-19.

We had conflicts with the Electoral Commission on what register to utilize and the issue has been at the Supreme Court and we are hanging tight for the Supreme Court for its decision. Whatever decision the Supreme Court gives, we are prepared to be well behaved residents so we will regard the decision of the court. Yet, whatever the decision is, there will be an enrollment practice whether a constrained enlistment, new enrollment exercise, or approval of a current register. Whichever enrollment it is, I will get a kick out of the chance to beg Togbui to beat the gong to every one of our kin to come out and register so that in December they can enlist and exercise their votes, ” he said.
